In Loving Memory of Betty Sue Steward-Lewis
July 29, 1949 - July 13, 2025
Betty, a beloved mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and wife, entered eternal rest on July 13, 2025, at the age of 75. The love of her family surrounded her as she entered the peace of God’s presence.
Born to Margie Mae Steward and her late father, Johnnie Steward, in Benton Harbor, MI, she was known for her gentle strength and unwavering faith. Betty spent her early years in Dowagiac, MI, graduating from Dowagiac Union High School, Class of 1968, and spent the majority of her life in South Bend, IN. She was employed at Teachers’ Credit Union for 40-plus years, where she made a significant impact on the South Bend community and was loved by her team and her members. Betty was also a dedicated, long-standing member of Faith Apostolic Ministries (Faith Alive), where she served as a greeter and a participant in many other auxiliaries.
Betty loved to sing, dance, laugh, and take walks. You could find her talking back to the TV as she watched Gunsmoke, and she loved to watch Jackie Chan. Betty always had worship music playing, and she especially loved Deitrick Haddon. One of her favorite things to do was to spend time with her beloved grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Douglas Lewis, her father Johnnie Steward, and two brothers: Richard Steward and Johnnie Stewart Jr. (Grace). Betty leaves behind a legacy of love through her cherished daughter, Stephanie Marie Steward-Bridges, and son-in-law, Kevin Bridges. She was a proud grandmother to three precious grandchildren: Kevin Jr. (Ashley), Kasey, Kennedi, and two great-grandchildren, Chase and Zayden, who brought her immeasurable joy.
She is also survived by her mother, Margie Steward; four sisters, Mary Bethea, Victoria Frazier, Jackie Steward-McNeal and Sylvia Steward; and three brothers; Leroy (JoAnn); Ricky and Donald; she also leaves behind step-children from her loving union with Doug; Douglas Jr. (Gigi), Jackie (Lance), Dwayne, Doran, and Tony; along with a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends who will miss her deeply.
Betty will be remembered for the quiet ways she poured love into others’ lives. She was a woman of great strength, prayer, and a servant’s heart. Though our hearts are heavy, we rejoice in knowing she is reunited with those who went before her and now rests in the eternal arms of the Lord. Arrangements have been entrusted to www.boydandsonfuneralhome.com where condolences may be shared. 11AM Memorial Service Thursday July 17, 2025 at Faith Alive Ministries.
