Mr. James Booker T. Bridges entered this world on September 7, 1936 in Ethel, MS the second eldest to Rosie Lee Brown and James Payton Bridges. James departed this life on December 30, 2025 at the age of 89 surrounded by family and friends; leaving behind a legacy built on quiet strength, unwavering dedication, and deep love for his family.
James attended Manassas High School where he graduated in 1955. Just one year later he met his forever partner Charlotte Askew and their union of 69 years brought about four sons Fredrick (Fay) of Dallas, TX, Deadrick (Gloria), Andre (Betty), and Kevin (Stephanie) all of South Bend, IN. Their union took them from Memphis, TN to Chicago, IL and then finally to South Bend, IN where they planted their roots. James was a devoted employee of Bendix/Honeywell for 30+ years. His time there allowed him to cross paths and leave an impression on many people.
He is survived by his wife, children, and a legacy of treasured memories. James was blessed to have loving brothers and sisters who will miss him dearly; Amanda Sargent, Eddie Bridges, Carrie Mae Dotson, Burdell (Patricia) Brown, Frances Hartwell, & Michael Brown. Others left to cherish James and the impact he had on their lives are his grandchildren to whom he was known as Papa; Charleta “Magoo”, Mark, Tiffany, Jermaine, Andrea, Amanda, Ashley, Kevin Jr. (Ashley), Jazmyn, Kennedi, Kasey, and Terrizha along with a host of great-grandchildren and even a great-great grandchild.
James had close cousins that were more like brothers; Eli (Rosie) Hannah, Marvin (Linda) Hannah, James “Sonny” (Benita) Hannah. As well as a multitude of nieces, nephews, and other beloved family members and friends who will hold dear the memories of his life. James is now able to be reunited with his mother & father who preceded him in death. James was a quiet force, but he always knew just enough. He might not have asked many questions, yet he could slide in a perfectly timed joke about your dilemma—one that made you laugh, think, and realize he understood more than you thought. Sometimes, you had to pay attention to his silence, because that silence spoke volumes. He kept your secrets, judged no one, and when he offered advice, it was short, honest, and right on target—it hit exactly where you needed it to. He was truly one of a kind.
There will never be another Pop-a-Dop.
