In Loving Memory of Lubirta Smith
March 3, 1947 — May 6, 2025
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Lubirta Smith, who departed this life on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at 1:15 p.m. at her daughter’s home, surrounded by the love of her family. She was 78 years old.
Lubirta was born on March 3, 1947, in Clarksdale, Mississippi, to the union of Bearlie and Christine Howard. As a young child, her family moved to South Bend, Indiana, where she grew up and built her life. Lubirta dedicated many years of service as a Surgical Technician at Memorial Hospital, where she touched countless lives through her work.
A woman of deep faith, Lubirta was a devoted member of Sweet Home Baptist Church. She had a passion for writing poetry, found peace in gazing at the sky, and lived her life as a strong believer in God.
Lubirta leaves to cherish her memory her loving husband, William Smith; three sons, Steven (Mitzy) Howard, Jerry (Tammy) Blackmon, and Casey (Wenona) Blackmon; two daughters, Barbara Blackmon and Angela Blackmon; two sisters Willa and Cynthia Howard, one brother Richard Howard. 29 grandchildren and 54 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bearlie and Christine Howard; her sister, Irma Fultz; her brother, Bearlie Howard Jr.; one grandson; and two great-grandsons. She also leaves a host of nieces, nephews family and friends.
Lubirta’s warm spirit, enduring faith, and love for her family will be forever remembered by all who knew her.
Celebration of Life will take place 1PM on Friday May 16, 2025 at Berean Transformation Center Seventh-day Adventist Church 623 S. St. Joseph St. South Bend, IN with a viewing one-hour prior. Arrangements have been entrusted to www.boydandsonfuneralhome.com where condolences may be shared.
