Rubye Flint Obituary

SOUTH BEND, IN - Rubye Ilene Flint, longtime resident of South Bend, passed on to heavenly rest with her son and daughter-in-law at her side, following an illness. Rubye was the eldest of two daughters born to the union of George and Irene (Wilkins) Hawkins in Water Valley, Mississippi on January 30, 1945. She was raised in Memphis, TN where she received her elementary and high school education. After graduating, she attended college at Tennessee State University.

Rubye moved to South Bend, IN in 1965 and began a career at Ivy Tech College (old Sample St. location) as an Instructor, teaching Keyboarding and Shorthand from 1974-1988. She then started working for the South Bend Community School Corporation in 1988. She also worked part-time at the JMS Building Market Strategies from 1994-2006. She was working at Washington High School when she became ill.

In 1974 she met her husband, the late Duane (Jelly) Flint. Their union was blessed with one son. Rubye loved to look her best, keeping up with her hair appointments and wearing the latest trends of fashion. A character of a woman who always left an impression. Rubye spent her off time relaxing at her lake home in Michigan, cooking, and traveling. She loved the holidays along with the spirit each one possessed. Her favorite movie was “Miracle on 34th Street”. She also liked CNN news. The last ten years of Rubye's life were dedicated to her two grandchildren whom she adored with all of her heart.

Cherishing her memory will be her only child, beloved son, Kevin Flint Sr., daughter-in-law, Mary-Jo Flint, one granddaughter, Laila Katherine Flint, one grandson, Kevin Duane (KJ) Flint Jr., one sister, Georgia (W.G. Billy) Davis of Cordova, TN; and three nephews, Darryl, Jermaine, and Christopher Davis of Memphis, TN; a very special God-son, Lee Miller of South Bend, IN; special cousin, Kyndra Reid of Granger, IN; close friends, Bettie Schoby and Gladys Thomas of South Bend, IN; and a best friend, Jenny Reed of Aldie, VA.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Irene Hawkins; her husband, Duane (Jelly) Flint; and a loving aunt, Klister Patton. She also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends from the community and School Corporation.

A special thank you to Memorial Hospital 10th Floor Oncology Staff, Briarcliff Health and Rehabilitation Center Staff, and Hospice Care to Care Staff.
